SHEPHERD DAHABIYA — Nile, Egypt A dahabiya is not a river cruise ship, and the distinction matters. Under sail on the Nile, Shepherd moves at the pace the river sets, and that pace opens up mooring spots the large cruise vessels cannot reach: quiet islands, unhurried stretches of riverbank, anchorages well away from the crowded cruise terminals and the noise of the towns. The hull is hand-painted by an artist, which gives the yacht an exterior unlike anything else on the water — a moving canvas rather than a livery. Inside, the design draws on the visual language of ancient Egyptian art, carried through in the materials, the furnishings and the decorative detail of the shared spaces. Accommodation is arranged across 12 cabins for up to 24 guests, in two groupings of ten and two. Detailed bed configurations are available on request. Each cabin has generous windows, so the passing landscape stays with you even during the quiet hours of the afternoon — a practical point on the Nile, where much of the pleasure lies in simply watching the banks change. The shaded sundeck is the natural centre of life on board: wide enough to spread out, sheltered from the midday sun, and positioned to catch the breeze that comes off the water as the temples, villages and green cultivated margins slide past. It is where most groups end up spending their days, and where the sails overhead do more for the atmosphere than any engine ever could. The crew handles the sailing, the service and the daily rhythm of the itinerary discreetly, in the manner expected of a private charter rather than a scheduled cruise.
