DERIN DENIZ — 27m gulet, cruising Turkey Some yachts are built for speed; a gulet is built for the pace of the Turkish coast. DERIN DENIZ, 27 metres (89ft) of custom-built gulet launched in 2008 and refitted in 2023, belongs to that second family — a hull that moves at 10 knots because there is no reason to arrive anywhere sooner, with 13 knots in reserve when the wind or the schedule asks for it. Below deck, six cabins accommodate twelve guests, all with en-suite facilities. Two are owner's cabins; two more are fitted with a double bed, and the remaining two with twin beds — a spread that works as easily for two families sharing a week as for a group of friends who all expect the same standard of comfort. On a gulet, joinery, upholstery and finishes take the full force of sun, salt and daily use, and a recent programme of work is what separates a yacht that photographs well from one that still feels right in its fifth season. This is a yacht that has been kept, not simply owned. A crew of four looks after the yacht and the guests aboard — the discreet ratio that allows meals to appear on the aft deck without ceremony, and anchorages to be chosen for the right reasons rather than the convenient ones. Her cruising ground is Turkey: the gulfs, the pine-lined bays and the ancient shorelines of the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, best seen from the water and best reached under a gulet's unhurried rhythm.
